Responding to Text Messages

The advancement of technology has created a way for us to communicate easily. Internet chat, video conferences, phone calls and texting.
Millions of Text messages are sent daily. It's cheap, random and of course the receivers reaction could not be seen nor heard.. But do we need to reply to all messages we receive? When we receive a quote or a joke or some story that makes you laugh or cry, does this mean that we have to say thanks? Or reply what was our reaction? Or just do nothing and keep you thoughts to yourself?
What about when a superior sends an instruction? I sit deem proper to say " Acknowledge"? What about "Copy". or "Okay" which means I received the message. Then what?
